The main purpose of this process is to clean the surfaces of the parts and to prepare for possible coating, painting, etc.

1. DUST AND SMOKE RELEASED DURING SANDBLASTING

Sandblasting operators live with dust due to the nature of the process being performed. Since it is a process that is constantly exposed to dust, the operators doing this job are well aware of the importance of reducing the density of dust in working environments.

The blast powder characteristic depends on the equipment used, the type of material blasted, and the coating you removed when blasting parts.

The particles released during the sandblasting application consist of the coating separated from the material blasted due to high pressure blasting, the sandblasted material and the material sprayed during blasting. The vast majority of the materials sprayed for sandblasting fall directly to the bottom of the sandblasting area, where it is large in size. However, the size of other particles ranges from 0.5 to 5.0 microns. Particles of 1 micron and less (submicron) are particularly dangerous for human health and can cause irreversible damage if inhaled. The irregular size, shape and coarse structure of the particles released during the sandblasting application make them highly abrasive. Care must be taken when designing systems for the collection of abrasive dust. 3. CHOOSING THE RIGHT FILTER UNIT

Dust collection systems used for the suction and filtration of dust and fumes during blasting are critical for the effective collection and filtration of submicron particles (less than 1 µm). ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers) uses the Minimum Efficiency Rating Value (MERV) criterion to determine the filter efficiency and capacity of particles within a certain size range. Minimum MERV 15 filters should be used for the filtration of dust and smoke released during the grinding process. In the filtration of highly harmful particles such as Chromium (Stainless Steel), Copper and Manganese, a filter efficiency of MERV 16 and above is required.

Filter media (the area where dust and fumes are kept in the dust extraction unit) plays a critical role in the efficient filtering of fumes released during the grinding application. In processes where the filter media cannot be selected correctly, undesirable consequences such as frequent clogging of the filters, high electricity consumption, frequent pauses of the grinding process may occur. Therefore, high quality filter media must be used.
